Are Fine Gael too presumptive?
The first election canvassers arrived at my door this week, and unlike some of my neighbours who are displaying signs warding off various or all parties, I’m interested to see if the ruling elite and their foot soldiers can earn my vote.
This weekend, a pleasant canvasser disrupted my enjoyment of the Sunday afternoon football match. The young male canvasser, supported by a quiet, older woman was representing Fine Gael, currently Irelands second party, and perceived main benefactor of the decline in the ruling party Finna Fali.
It was an interesting chat, for two reasons. Firstly, the canvasser had no knowledge of the local issues his party’s local councillor was unable/unwilling to resolve. Secondly, he had an air about him that suggested his party was the only party to vote for as the governing party had made such a mess of the county.
Whilst he may be correct about Fianna Fail, if the wannabes who desire to replace, expect instead of earning the vote of the disillusioned, they may find a different result to the one they expect on 25th February!
